Hand Therapy

Hand therapy is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper extremity (shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand). It uses a number of therapeutic interventions to help return a person to their highest level of function. Hand therapy grew out of the need for a specialist with the knowledge and experience required to manage the challenging recovery of complex hand and upper extremity injuries.

A hand therapist is an occupational therapist (OT) or physical therapist (PT) who, through advanced continuing education, clinical experience, and integration of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, has become proficient in the treatment of pathological upper extremity conditions resulting from trauma, disease, congenital or acquired deformity. These therapists can treat fractures, nerve compression disorders, ligament tears, tendinopathy, and arthritis and are highly specialized in custom splinting and post-operative rehabilitation.

Spine Therapy

Orthopedic spine therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy for injuries or pain originating in the back, neck, shoulders, and/or pelvis. It is non-invasive, meaning that no surgery is involved. Spine therapy is used to treat a variety of medical conditions or as part of a recovery program following surgery. Whereas physical therapy is a generalized approach to rehabilitation, spine therapy targets the skeletal structure, muscle groups, and intervertebral discs of the spinal column for adjustment, pain relief, posture correction, and functional improvement. Spine therapy is conducted by orthopedic spine therapists rather than physical therapists.

Spinal pain is surprisingly common, with as many as 80 percent of all Americans experiencing it at one point or another during their lifetime. It can be debilitating and is often recurrent. If back or related pain is troubling you, arrange to see the orthopedic specialists at OrthoNC.

Spine Conditions:
-Sciatica
-SI joint dysfunction
-Lumbar Strains
-Lumbar and Cervical Radiculopathy
-Lumbar and Cervical Stenosis
Vestibular Therapy

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is an exercise-based treatment program designed to:

1) Enhance gaze stability

2) Enhance postural stability

3) Improve vertigo

4) Improve activities of daily living

VRT facilitates vestibular recovery mechanisms: vestibular adaptation, substitution by the other

eye-movement systems, substitution by vision, somatosensory cues, other postural strategies,

and habituation. The key exercises for VRT are head-eye movements with various body

postures and activities, and maintaining balance with a reduced support base with various

orientations of the head and trunk. These exercises are done while performing various upper-

extremity tasks, repeating movements that provoke vertigo, and gradual exposure to various sensory and motor environments. VRT is an appropriate intervention for any stable but poorly compensated vestibular lesion, regardless of the patient’s age, the cause, and symptom duration and intensity. Vestibular suppressants, visual and somatosensory deprivation, immobilization, old age, concurrent central lesions, and long recovery from symptoms, but there is no difference in the final outcome. As long as exercises are performed several times every day, even brief periods of exercise are sufficient to facilitate vestibular recovery.

HEAL. MOVE. STRENGTHEN. LIVE.

We rely on the most advanced, specialized, and evidence-based therapy techniques and modalities to help patients achieve optimal results. These include:

Graston Technique

Soft tissue injuries can be debilitating and frustrating. Graston Technique (GT) therapy is successful in effectively treating all soft tissue conditions, whether they are chronic, acute, or post-surgical. GT therapy can help you get back to enjoying a full and active life.

Our unique technique and instruments enable the treatment of scar tissue and fascial restrictions during rehabilitation that allow for faster rehabilitation and with greater success when the goal is restoring range of motion, eliminating pain, and restoring normal function.

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training

Blood flow restriction training is a technique that can be used to perform exercises with a reduced amount of blood flow to the arm or leg.  This is often performed using a cuff or strap placed tightly around the limb to reduce, but not completely occlude, blood flow.  The benefit of blood flow restriction training is to allow the person to exercise with lower intensity, but, still have the benefits of high-intensity training.

Power Plate Therapy

When it comes to building muscles, recovering from injuries, and using physical therapy and strength training techniques to improve overall health, modern technology has come a long way. Through advanced therapies and various treatment methods, today’s physical therapists develop innovative ways of helping patients heal their bodies.

One of the best ways people can heal themselves from eliminating chronic pain to recovering from a sports injury is by gaining strength. Typically, the area of the body that is suffering is not the sole focus of treatment. To help reduce or eliminate knee pain, hip pain, back pain, or even help heal a muscle strain, a therapist’s aim should often be to strengthen other muscles to help relieve tension in the area that is injured.

Power Plate vibrates up to 50 times a second sending tiny vibrations through your body. These tiny micro vibrations activate more muscles, burn more calories, improve circulation, and assist muscle recovery.

McKenzie Technique

The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) is an internationally researched and acclaimed system of assessment and management for spinal and extremity musculoskeletal disorders developed by New Zealand Physiotherapist Robin McKenzie. It has been widely used all over the world for more than 60 years. Simply put, it is a comprehensive assessment and management approach based on sound and logical principles that focuses on the patient and their potential to self-manage and recover their previous level of function.

Clinicians trained in the MDT system are able to assess and classify all complaints of the musculoskeletal system. That means if a problem is coming from the spine, extremity joints, muscles or tendons, then a MDT evaluation is appropriate. An MDT clinician will be able to identify if MDT is warranted, what management strategy is best, and outline a predicted recovery pathway.

A key component to this method is the initial assessment, a safe and reliable approach to reaching an accurate classification. From there, we develop an appropriate management plan, taking into account all the various factors that can influence a patient’s experience of pain. Expensive tests such as MRIs are often unnecessary.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a treatment that healthcare providers use for pain and movement issues associated with myofascial trigger points. With this technique, a provider inserts thin needles into or near your trigger points. The needles stimulate your muscles, which causes them to contract or twitch. This helps relieve pain and improve your range of motion.
