A New Option for Thumb Arthritis Relief: Dr. Tarr Performs First Biopro Thumb CMC Implant in North Carolina

If you’ve ever experienced thumb pain that makes it difficult to grip, pinch, or perform everyday tasks, you may be dealing with thumb CMC arthritis, a common condition that affects the base of the thumb.

At OrthoNC, we’re proud to bring innovative treatment options to our patients. We’re excited to share that Dr. Tarr has successfully performed his first Biopro Thumb CMC Implant procedure, offering a cutting-edge solution for thumb arthritis right here in North Carolina.

Notably, Dr. Tarr is currently the only hand surgeon in North Carolina providing this advanced procedure, giving patients access to a unique alternative to traditional thumb arthritis surgery.

What Is Thumb CMC Arthritis?

Thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) arthritis occurs when the cartilage at the base of the thumb wears down over time. This can lead to:

-Pain when gripping or pinching

-Weakness in the hand

-Swelling or stiffness

-Difficulty with daily activities like opening jars or turning keys

This condition is especially common in active adults and individuals who use their hands frequently.

Introducing the Biopro Thumb CMC Implant

The Biopro Thumb CMC Implant is an innovative surgical option designed to treat thumb arthritis while preserving more of your natural anatomy.

Unlike traditional procedures, which often involve removing the trapezium bone, this implant:

-Restores joint space and stability

-Maintains thumb strength and function

-Avoids complete bone removal

-Offers a more anatomy-preserving approach

For many patients, this means the potential for improved function and a more natural feel after surgery.

Who Is a Candidate for This Procedure?

The Biopro Thumb CMC Implant may be a great option for patients who:

-Have moderate to severe thumb CMC arthritis

-Continue to experience pain despite injections, bracing, or hand therapy

-Want to maintain strength, mobility, and hand function

-Are looking for an alternative to traditional thumb arthritis surgery

Every patient is different, and a consultation with a hand specialist is the best way to determine the right treatment plan.
