OrthoNC is helping expand the options available to patients who find themselves in this treatment gap.
Dr. Mark Galland and the OrthoNC Surgery Center were recently featured in Becker’s ASC Review for their experience with the MISHA Knee System, an innovative treatment option for certain patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.
Helping Patients Stay Active
Knee osteoarthritis can affect much more than the knee itself. As pain progresses, patients may gradually stop participating in the activities they enjoy, from exercising and traveling to playing with grandchildren or simply getting through the day comfortably.
As Dr. Galland explained in the Becker’s feature, the impact can happen little by little as patients begin giving up activities because of their knee pain.
At OrthoNC, our goal is to provide patients with treatment options appropriate for where they are in their orthopaedic journey. For some patients, that may include conservative care. For others, it may eventually mean joint replacement. And for certain patients in between, MISHA may provide another option.
About the MISHA Knee System
The MISHA Knee System is an implantable shock absorber designed for certain patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis. The device is placed alongside the knee joint and is designed to reduce some of the load placed on the affected portion of the knee while preserving the patient’s existing joint.
MISHA may be an option for patients who:
- Have medial compartment knee osteoarthritis
- Continue to experience pain that interferes with everyday activities
- Have not found adequate relief from previous surgical and/or nonsurgical treatments
- Are unwilling to undergo or are not eligible for total knee replacement because of their age or the absence of advanced osteoarthritis
Unlike a knee replacement, MISHA does not replace the knee joint. Determining whether MISHA is appropriate requires an evaluation by an orthopaedic specialist.
Specialized Outpatient Orthopaedic Care
For appropriate patients, MISHA procedures are performed at the OrthoNC Surgery Center in Wakefield.
In the Becker’s feature, Dr. Galland also discussed the benefits patients can experience in a specialized ambulatory surgery setting, including care from a focused orthopaedic team, a more personalized experience, and the ability to return home following the procedure.
More Options for Knee Pain
Being told that you are “not ready for a knee replacement” shouldn’t necessarily mean simply living with worsening knee pain.
Advances in orthopaedic care are creating additional options for certain patients, and OrthoNC is proud to be part of expanding those possibilities for people living with knee osteoarthritis.
If knee pain is keeping you from the activities you enjoy and previous treatments are no longer providing enough relief, talk with an OrthoNC orthopaedic specialist about your options and whether MISHA may be appropriate for you.
